Psychology is one of the most misunderstood disciplines (Discussion)

The word ‘psychology’ can often conjure up thoughts of bearded psychiatrists analyzing clients on couches or rats running around in mazes being watched by men and women in lab coats.

I think that for many people in the world today, they think of these misconceptions when the word psychology and a career as a psychologist come to mind. I believe that psychology is one of the most misunderstood disciplines in the general public’s opinion.

What do you think? Does psychology have more stereotypes and misconceptions than other social sciences or career paths or is it just the same as all others?

I agree with this. Psychology is an integrated part of human life.I believe every sane person is a psychologist because knowingly or unknowingly we undertake various psychological processes; the only difference is that some have used it to make their profession and others I believe are ameture psychologists. One of the reasons why this field is misunderstood is that unlike other objective branches of knowledge, here in psychology the object of study is the subject itself which makes it more elusive.so the stereotypes associated is also so much varied, each one will have his or her own opinion, we may have as many ideas as our population.But all these need not perturb us for the very essence of psychology is that it answers our innate queries though differently for different persons but it does pacifies all.For this reason alone psychology is acceptable in spite of all its diversities.

I agree with it. All type of persons are misunderstanding them selves as Psychologists. They believe mind of others can be anlysed easily. So that in the realm of psychologu new theories and school of thoughts and coming and vanishing. This trend make confusion to psychology students.

one of the conceptions about psychology is that it is too vague to study!!

the most annoying Q that i have cum across till now is “Can you read my mind?”
